L'accoglienza degna non consiste solo nel garantire il cibo e il riparo, ma anche nella reale valorizzazione delle capacità e delle competenze, effettive o potenziali, di ciascun individuo e a beneficio di tutti

Christopher, dopo aver trascorso la sua prima infanzia negli U.S.A, è tornato con la propria madre in Nigeria dove si è diplomato presso la E.C.W.A Staff Secondary School Jos, Plateau State Nigeria e quindi ha conseguito nel 2012 il diploma di laurea in Contabilità finanziaria presso la University of Maiduguri, Borno State Nigeria.

Dopo la laurea e prima di partire per l’Europa, dove ha ottenuto la protezione sussidiaria, ha lavorato in Nigeria per 3 anni come Archivista e Supervisore finanziario presso una ditta di Informatica, la A.B Tech Computer Institute e per altri 3 anni come Contabile/Supervisore finanziario/Revisore di bilancio presso la Proton Integrated Engineering Services Ltd, un’impresa di ingegneria edile.

Dal gennaio 2017 è volontario presso Baobab Experience, collaborando nelle ordinarie attività di distribuzione di cibo e vestiti, nella mediazione interculturale, ma anche recandosi con gli attivisti presso le scuole pubbliche del Lazio per raccontare la propria storia.

Come spesso accade nei centri di accoglienza, dove gli ospiti subiscono una svalutazione delle proprie esperienze e competenze, così anche a Christopher non era stato redatto un cv né all’assistente sociale era noto il suo percorso di studi: per questa ragione Christopher si è rivolto al Gruppo di Formazione e Orientamento al Lavoro di Baobab Experience, con un cv redatto da sé e il desiderio di vedere valorizzate e incrementate le proprie esperienze. Tramite Baobab Experience, Christopher si è candidato ed ha ottenuto una borsa di studio per rifugiati da ISTUD Business School – Università Cattolica di Milano per un Master universitario di primo livello in Risorse Umane e Organizzazione: la borsa di studio coprirebbe i costi del corso (12000 euro IVA esente per 6 mesi full time di formazione in aula e project work, 3/6 mesi di stage in azienda, 90% di placement su 655 studenti diplomati), ma non del vitto e dell’alloggio (i primi 6 mesi a Baveno sul Lago Maggiore e i successivi mesi di stage in azienda).

È necessario raccogliere 9600 euro per garantire per un anno vitto e alloggio.

La scelta di attivare una campagna di raccolta fondi per Christopher non è assistenzialistica o paternalistica, ma politica: Baobab Experience è qui per ribadire che l’accoglienza degna non consiste solo nel garantire il cibo e il riparo, ma anche nella reale valorizzazione delle capacità e delle competenze, effettive o potenziali, di ciascun individuo e a beneficio di tutti.

Eighth grade? No, Master!

A worthy reception does not mean only providing food and shelter, but also making a true evaluation of skills and competencies, both current and potential, of each individual, for the benefit of all.

After spending his early childhood in the U.S., Christopher and his mother returned to Nigeria, where he graduated from the E.C.W. Staff Secondary School in Jos Plateau State, Nigeria. In 2012, he earned a Bachelor's degree in Financial Accounting from the University of Maiduguri, in Borno State, Nigeria.

After obtaining his degree, and before leaving for Europe where he was granted subsidiary protection, he worked in Nigeria for 3 years as Computer Instructor at A.B Tech Computer Institute, plus 3 years as Accountant/ Financial Supervisor/Budgetary Auditor at Proton Integrated Engineering Services Ltd, a construction company.

Since January 2017 Christopher is a volunteer at Baobab Experience, collaborating in the ordinary business of distributing food and clothing, in intercultural mediation, and also in visiting with activists at public schools in Lazio to relate his own, personal story.

As is often the case in reception centers where guests suffer a devaluation of their experiences and skills, no resume had been written for Christopher nor was the social worker even aware of his educational history. As a result, Christopher turned to the Training and Career Guidance Group of Baobab Experience, with a self-prepared curriculum and a desire to give his own experiences their true value and to improve them.

Through Baobab Experience, Christopher has applied for and obtained a scholarship for refugees, for a first level Master’s degree in Human Resources and Organization, from ISTUD Business School – Università Cattolica di Milano (Catholic University of Milan). The scholarship covers the costs of the course (12,000 euro for 6 months of full-time classes and project work, 3-6 months of internships, 90% of placement out of 655 graduate students). It does not include lodging nor meals (for the first 6 months, in Baveno on Lake Maggiore, nor later in stage).

9600 euros are required to ensure food and lodging for one year.

Choosing to engage in a fundraising campaign for Christopher is not paternalistic, but ethical and political. Baobab Experience is here to reiterate that a worthy reception does not mean only providing food and shelter but also making a true evaluation of skills and competencies, both current and potential, of each individual, for the benefit of all.
